3C Class

HELLO GUYS!

Hello guys!
We are students from Santa Maria del Pilar school, Zaragoza.
We are also working in the Comenius project and we would like to tell you some things about us and our city.
In our class we are thirty students, nine girls and twenty-one boys. In Comenius project we are working with the English´s teachers, Eva Flores and Rebeca Romero, the Geography´s teacher, Carlos Guallart.
We think that you will like our city, because it´s a fantastic place to live. Here you can go to a lot of parks, visit many museums, churchs and many other interesting places.
Our school is very big, one of the biggest in Aragon because we are more than 1.500 pupils. There are four big buildings with a lot of classrooms, a grass soccer field, two swimming pools, ping-pong tables, a church, a sports center, a few computer rooms, and a lot of outdoor spaces. Here you can do a lot of extracurricular activities.
If you want, you can tell us things about your class, your school and your city.
You can see our photos on the blog of Comenius project.

PowerPoint Presentations

PowerPoint Presentations from Carlos Guallart on Vimeo.

On Monday, we presented our Power Points. Most of them talked about their city, their culture, their school.. Each country had his own Power Point.
Germans talked in the first time. They talked about their city Neumarkt, his localization, his customs.. and their school, they showed it all from the playground to the timetable. They presented photos of the trip to Sweden and France too. They showed a bit of the nature in Neumark and the sights in their city.
Swedish were the second group who showed their Power Point, presented by two girls: Katerine and Mariam. Their Power Point talked about their city, Lund which is in the south of Swedish, they said that their city was full of students, it was so green because there it rained a lot, and so much people use the bike and not the car. Thay talked about their school too, the Falads-Garden. It was so beautiful, we enjoyed it.
The Frenchs were the third, they had three Power Points, and they talked about the history of Belfort, their town, and their tipycal customes, their festivals.. Then they showed us the Sainte-Marie, their school. At the end, they talked about the wildlife and the nature of their city. Their Power Point was the longest one.
The last Power Point was the Spanish one. It was presented by Javier Toral, RIcardo Cañamate, Chema Rivera and Begoña Villarejo. They had done it here in Zaragoza. It talked about our school, Santa María del Pilar, Marianistas, his most important parts, his history, his localization.. They talked about our main activities like Christmas, Hallowen.. It was so good!
We had to do it twice, because there were two classes who wanted to see it! The second time was a little bit boring.. but it was a great time to learn thing about other countries!

The Canyons Guara River

The Canyons Guara River from Carlos Guallart on Vimeo.

At ten o'clock we arrived to the natural park, we went by bus and first we had twenty minutes to eat or drink something and see some parts of the village, Santa Cilia.
Then we went to a room in wich a woman taught us the geology, vegetation and fauna of this park.
In the wall there were a lot of photos of animals and plants.
Later, we went to another room, with many showcases representing typical scenes of the park.
In the room of the ''Friends of the Vultures” we saw the different types of vultures in this park like: the Eurasian Griffon, easy to identity by its characteristical circular flight on ascending in the thermal currents, the Bearded Vulture and the Golden Eagle.
We also saw the different typical animals in the park: the wild bear, fox, wild cat or mountain cat and garden dormouse. Then, we went to the beginning of the park and we went trekking.
When we needed to go across the river was very funny because a lot of people put their foot into the water.
While we were walking the woman showed us the different plants as Rosemary and basil and different trees like the Portuguese Oak, the Scots Pine, the Beechwood, the Oak Wood or the Boxwood.
Later, we went back to the bus and we went to a restaurant and had a very good lunch.
In short, we had a very nice day and we learned a lot of new things!

City Tour

In the morning, we arrived at the school at 8.30 and we went to Pilar by bus. Then we visited the museum of the Roman forum. We saw the pipelines of lead and the common sewer from the time of Tiberius.
After that we visited the museum of the fluvial port and we watched a video that explained the trade in that time.
While we were going to the museum of the Roman theatre the guide explained to us the most important streets in Roman time, that were: the “Cardo street” that is the same as Don Jaime and the “Decumano” that is the same as the “paseo La Mina”.
When the guide finished the explanation, we had a meal and we went to the museum of the Roman theatre, there the guide explained the customs of the Romans and we saw the ruins of the Roman Theatre.
After that we had a walk around the Roman Walls, then we took the bus to school.
After lunch, we went to the Aljaferia Palace which is dated from the Muslims time and it's beautiful.
The palace was redecorated by Pedro IV of Aragón and was reconstructed by the Catholic King and Queen.

European Debate Presentation

On Tuesday, we went to the “Aula Magna” to make some mixed groups, in which there were three or four people, each one from a different country.
On Thursday before lunch, we went to the school library.
Pepe Trívez, the Spanish language teacher, was waiting for us, because he was in charge of the activity we were going to do: a debate about European politic topics, for example, legalizing drugs in the UE, or the holidays in each country.
We were supposed to read some questions about different topics and look for some information about them at the internet quickly. We had to take out three things from an envelope: topic time and language.
We were very nervous because we didn´t know what topic we had to explain, and the most important thing, we didn´t know which language we had to speak in, but we thought that hopefully it would be a language that we knew. Those languages were Spanish, English, French and German.
The first topics had to be explained in French, so it was a bit difficult because there were some groups where there weren´t any French students , but we finally did it well.
After each explanation, we could translate the last one into another language, so many groups did it and they got a lot of points more than the ones they got for their discussions.
At the end, most groups had many pints, but two of them got six pints, so they were the ones who won the game.
This activity was very interesting for us and we learnt a lot about it. Moreover, we have been told this activity will be useful in our future, because we will have to work with foreign people and in other languages.
We liked it very much and we hope we will do something similar again.
In Sweden we usually do debates like this in both Swedish and English class. And in Germany they do it too. There is only Spain who does not do it.
Marta, Chema, Rene and Katarina.

Activity in the Laboratory

On this Thursday morning all of us met in the school laboratory. We all got in groups of three or four people, then we were given instructions to do the experiments. The first experiment was with a candle, we were supposed to light it and observed what happened. Then we were supposed to blow it out and write down more observations.
After that we had to melt some ice cubes and observe the changes in their state, from solid to liquid.
We boiled the ice cubes and took the temperature of them while they were getting hotter and hotter, to see how the temperature rose. Then we drew a diagram of the rising temperature in the difference of twenty seconds. After the experiments were done we were supposed to write a conclusion. At the changes of state; solid, liquid and gaseous.
Most of us had already done experiments like this in maybe 6th grade, so we were familiar with this kind of activities.

Mariam, Anna, Alicia.

Leave your mark

At first we did the activity of “Leave your mark” which is called like this because you have to paint your hand in a paper.
At the beginning of the activity we had a meeting with the person who was in charge of the activity. She told us than an artist is the one who can transmit their feelings and what he or she thinks. If you get this ability, you may become an artist,
She showed some photos of famous painters to us, and told us something about their lives.
Then we went to the Technology room and we started the project, we were divided into groups of four people.
Each group took one paper, and one of the groups was lining and the others drew their body figure, we paint our hands, the names of our countries and our names.
It was useful to know better each other, we a had a very good time and enjoyed so much.
When we finished the project, we went to our pavilion and put it in the hall, for the rest of the pupils could see our project.
Ana Martín.

Mathematical photography

Mathematical photography from Carlos Guallart on Vimeo.

Mathematical photography is a traditional activity in our school, linked to the subject with the same name. The event brings together secondary school and high school students, and what teachers want is to make students see that mathematics is more than just numbers, and they are present in many aspects of the real and daily life. More specifically, with mathematical photography we try to bring into the class geometric shapes around us, both in the city and nature. This activity was born and is involved in the contest of the same name that promotes Andalan Secondary School in Zaragoza and in several years our students have been awarded top honors.
Participating is very simple and the rules are very clear and affecting: the size, the frame, the dates, the motifs; ... Students may submit up to three photographs.
New for this year is that at least one of the three photographs should be an architectural aspect (square, street, building, ...) in Zaragoza , as well as mathematical aspects. As our school has four classes per grade (A, B, C, D), we split the city into four zones and assign each letter an area of Zaragoza . With this, we get photographed much of the city and get to "an architecture –mathematical map" of our city.
The challenge ahead is to translate these photographs on a plane and do a little mathematical explanation of each one so that everyone can enjoy maths and our city.
